Defenition:
The European Union is a group of 28 states that take a part in the world's economy by acting as one economic branch of nations. The objective of the union is to eliminate trading zones and boost the wealth of the economy by strengthening the market system of the nation. Negotiations are mostly proceeded through supranational law between the members of the union.
Creation of the EU:
After the World War II, most of Europe strongly submitted to the idea of nationalism, which had many negative effects on the continent. To resolve the conflict, the Hague Conference, which is regarded as Europe's first federal establishments, founded the College of Europe and established the European Movement International, an advocacy group that signifies the idea of European unification. The Hague Conference's motive was to consolidate the people across Europe; that's the reason they created these public foundations.
In 1952, Belgium, France Luxembourg, Italy and Netherlands formed the European Coal and Steel Community, this is an organization that aims to federate the countries in Europe after the end of the World War II. By conducting this organization, Europe was already making it's first steps of becoming an economic and political union.
In 1957, the countries signed the Treaty of Rome which formed the European Economic Community. The goal of this organization was to amalgamate the economy of the 6 countries by creating a common marketplace for each other. The European Atomic Energy Community was formed, which is an organization that aims to establish a nuclear power market in Europe.
From this point on, the Europion Union was already being recognized, and it started to expand when Denmark joined in 1973, Greece in 1981 and Portugal and Spain in 1986. Also, in 1985, the union signed the Schengen agreement which permitted countries to abolish their internal borders and allowed citizens to travel without being examined in passport control customs. East Germany entered the union shortly after when the Eastern bloc was destroyed by the revolution in 1985.
